  web design and training

"the delivery" of a website involves more than simple design, as the user will need to be able to update the site easily and regularly with new pages and content. as such, the delivery of each completed site commission will include the following:

  1. consultation - establish the content, context, primary audience(s), usage and other requirements
  2. conceptualisation - a single page draft of website is completed and approved
  3. construction and testing - content is added and tested for browser compatibility, ease-of-use and code validation (e.g. links work, pages and images load quickly...)
  4. hand over - the site will be handed over, with site manual and 12-month support agreement. assistance will be offered in arranging hosting if necessary.

due to web design being a hobby and not a full-time job, i do not accept the majority of website commissions. i will assess site design requests on an individual basis. my criteria are

  1. the site is for personal use or will be of wider benefit to a community of not-for-profit organisation (e.g. a school or interest group)
  2. the project is relatively small and simple, taking into consideration the time available for completing the project (e.g. an informational site is a lot easier and quicker to code than an online shop)
  3. i will enjoy doing it

please feel free to contact me with a request, the worst i can say is "no"

additionally, or separately, i am also able to offer tailored training packages for a suite of applications, including (of course) web design.

  costing it up

each new site will have it's own requirements with regard to size, logo design, features and functionality, etc... i also appreciate that websites will generally be developed with the following restrictions:

  • Budget (both for design, and in long-term maintenance and hosting)
  • Skills of editors
  • Skills and accessibility limitations of users
  • Browser compatibility

as an indication of cost, the hosting of a basic site with no advanced functionality would cost around £30 per year. a web domain with email facilities would cost a further £5 - £15 per year, depending upon the level of service required. most web design houses charge around £300 - £1000 for the design of the site, depending upon the number of pages needed and the complexity of the design. additional costs you may have include a computer (£400+) and internet connection (up to £17 for broadband) with which to update the site, and the necessary web-authoring software (£free - £200).

whilst the domain purchase and hosting package is not provided by myself, i will offer advice and assistance in arranging suitable hosting for your site if required, as part of the service. basic site design and construction will be in the region of £300, depending on the complexity of the design brief. This price will include the index page. for a multi-page site, this cost will rise to £500, depending upon the content. a site manual will be provided free with all sites. i can also provide a tailored personal training package. training is recommended from 2 to 5 hours long, depending upon your requirements, and my fees are £50 per hour, regardless of audience size.
