What is Business Studies?

It's exactly what it says on the tin! Business Studies is a particularly varied subject including aspects of Management, Marketing, Finance, Employment and Consumer Law and Human Resources. All of these topics are set in the context of the external business environment. The course aims to develop a critical understanding of organisations and an awareness that business behaviour can be studied from the perspective of customers, shareholders, employees and society. It is important to understand the issues facing businesses, whether they are large or small, manufacturing or service, local, national or multinational, and to develop the skills of analysis and evaluation.

Is it right for me?

The course is not right for everyone, so ask yourself the following questions:
- When you leave school, do you want a job with responsibility, challenge and a good pay scale?
- Do you enjoy learning and developing your evaluation and problem-solving skills?
- Do you prefer your lessons to be interesting and involving?

If you are thinking "YES" to these questions then you should consider a Business Studies GCSE or AS/A2 level. The course complements most other subject options, since you will be both logical and free-thinking in the work you produce.

Will it be of any use in the real world?

There is a wide range of career opportunities into which Business Studies students enter. These include both public and private sector employment opportunities in small and medium sized organisations. Common jobs include working for the local council, civil service, retailers or industries in positions of some responsibility. Business Studies gives students the basic knowledge and understanding they need to set up and run their own business, compete with other businesses effectively and manage any type of organisation. With Business at A2 level, students can show a prospective employer that they have the skills and capabilities that they will need to become an effective manager in the near future.
